Now that you have gone through the process of the 3 P\’s, you should have a better idea of what you are working towards when it comes to taking what you are passionate about, what you have proficiency in, and how those two coincide with how you can turn that into a living.
Now, it may be a process to transition to the job or industry where these coincide, so in the meantime, you will want to look at how you can begin building a skillset in that direction. It\’s beneficial to turn what you may be doing as a hobby into something that could be an income producer because it will allow you to get paid while gaining skills and will permit you to figure out your niche or focus in the meantime. It also allows you to continue working in your current trade while pulling the boat as close to the dock as you are comfortable with doing so.
What Should You Do Before Jumping Into a Side-Hustle?
Before jumping from the current trade you are a part of into a replacement industry, you will want to look at what training, added skills, certifications, education, and other qualifications you will need. As you are gaining this through a second job that allows for on-the-job training, this may allow you to build in a side-hustle of sorts to pay down/off debt, increase savings, or provide money for investing as you prepare for the transition.
For example, suppose you are currently a project manager for a construction company and want to make a move to become a paramedic firefighter. You will quickly find that although the life experience is valuable, much of the professional certifications and even education may be non-transferable to the new industry from the previous one. You may want to consider starting as a volunteer at a fire station to build relationships while going through the schooling process of becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Working part-time in the field you\’re hoping to transfer into is also beneficial because it will allow you to make sure that you actually enjoy it. From that point, you can choose the best route before even separating yourself from your current role.
Now, this may not be the typical side-hustle, but it\’s a side-hustle with intentionality as it moves you toward your goal of coming to life in your vocation.
Have a Plan
Often, people just tell others to follow their passions or hearts without a plan. I believe this leads many to not succeed in the field they just jumped into because they failed to factor in everything they would need to know and have established before making the major shift.
Even if you can make the transition sooner rather than later without necessarily gaining more skill, education, or certifications, you may want to consider still adding a side-hustle in an area that makes sense for you. Doing so will allow you to still work toward your financial goals and maintain stability.
What Are Some Examples of Side-Hustles?
What do you have expertise in that can add value to someone else\’s life?
It could be as simple as renting a room or your house, listing an extra bedroom in your home as an Airbnb rental, tutoring, becoming a content creator, or flipping things. Figure out something that you can spend a few hours after your regular day job or on the weekend working on to gain expertise, grow in experience, and benefit financially.
The key here is not to just do something because someone told you to do so. I see this far too often, so don\’t let just another distraction into your life unless you understand it, can excel at it, and it adds value to it.
