Category Care

Jumping into this theme on Care, I left off with a question in the last episode. That is to write down a number from 1-10 on how you are doing. If you have not done so, write down that number. Today we are going to explore this further in figuring out where you are and how this may be affecting your personal finances.

Years ago a mentor of mine asked me how I was doing, my typical response was good and probably was that day. Knowing that he would have to ask clarifying questions to get a better answer, he asked the question a different way.

He said, \”let\’s go category by category, and you place a number from 1-10 in each category.\”

 So he started.

We\’re going to look at 5 P\’s that touch all of the bases for how you\’re doing overall.

  1. From 1-10, how clear is your purpose, and are you living out your purpose? This would be your vision for your life and how you carry out your God-given strengths and abilities. 1 being not at all, something needs to change and 10 being that you are living your best life and wouldn\’twouldn\’t change a thing.
  2. From 1-10, how is your physical place, and are you living where you want to live? Now, this would be the place in the home or apartment you live in, this could also be the area of the city you live in, but points to your overall enjoyment of the place that you reside. 1 being that you are not in the physical location you want to be in this season of life, and 10 being that it\’s another day in paradise.
  3. From 1-10, how about your provision or your financial position? How are you doing financially? How secure is your job or your business? Are you able to buy those things that you need meanwhile save for those things that you want? 1 being that you cannot cover your bills, liabilities, and living expenses, and 10 being that you have all you need to cover both what you need and what you want.
  4. From 1-10, how is your physical health? Looking at your physique and aspects like your blood pressure, weight, and other aspects of your overall health. 1 being not at all where you want to be, maybe you are struggling with multiple aspects of diet and exercise or have an autoimmune disease, 10 being that you are in peak performance.
  5. Lastly, from 1-10, how are you doing people-wise? How are your relationships with family and friends? Are they healthy? Do you have enough people in your corner with proper counsel, and are you giving back by developing others? 1 being that you do not have who you need in your corner or not enough of the right relationships and 10 being that you have the right mix, those relationships are healthy and thriving.

Now add up the one number for each category and divide by /50. This will give you a percentage. Mine at the time was in the high 60s. Being a lifelong student meant that I was actually failing. They say C\’s get degrees, and I did not have a passing grade at that point.

The great part of this quick evaluation is that it provides you with an indicator of what areas specifically need help. That you are not caring well for yourself so that then you have a target to focus on.

I have found that this little test has been really helpful in my relationships, improving both accountability and care for myself and others.

CTA:

My call to action is to take the number you received and share the test with someone you care about. Maybe a spouse, mentor, or best friend. This transparency will help break the ice per-se for better and deeper conversations that may be hard to start otherwise.
