Category Essentials

Today’s blog will be a bit more serious as I wrap up the theme of what’s essential to you. You may have heard about the importance of finding your why–your motivating factor or reason behind why you do what you actually do in life.

Now some people know what they wanted to do for a living from a very early age. Others follow in the footsteps of those who inspired or influenced them most, while others either followed a certain track because of prestige or money or are still figuring out what they want to do when they grow up.

…to which many of us fall into that category.

Since we most likely spend most of our waking hours working, it’s important to have intentionality with where you spend that time.

Far too many people have climbed the corporate ladder to find that they climbed the wrong one.

This is a tough reality, as it requires introspection, counsel, and determination to change your course thereafter and not just stay with what is comfortable.

It’s tough to build a life in a certain direction to then realize that you have to change course. If you have already reviewed what’s most important to you, you probably have a good idea as to whether you are where you want to be in life.

So let’s be honest, it’s easy to not necessarily focus on our long-term career, relationships, personal health, or finances until something or someone acts as a catalyst for change to motivate us to do so.

What you do for a living, how you live your life, and what you define as being essential in your world are all truly necessary in fulfilling the vision you have for your life. So what needs to happen for you to define your why and apply that why to action so that you are headed in the right direction for yourself?

This may be a career or field change that you have been avoiding; this may be you having some difficult conversations to improve your relationships ultimately; this may be closing a business that is no longer viable or pivoting from your original business model; this may be becoming much more disciplined in taking care of your health, talking through the aspects of life that you’re struggling with, or actually taking time to disconnect and recharge.

Unfortunately, I can relate to all of these.

In addition to the challenges we have collectively experienced over the last 18 months, I have dealt with all of the aforementioned aspects. Relational difficulties with family members and more than a couple of friendships, losing a business partner and closing a business, attempting to buy another business that fell through and pivoting two existing businesses to a new business model. This, along with selling my house and moving, figuring out how to best navigate my challenges, and continuously learning the difficulties of balance, self-care, and recovering from burnout. It’s exhausting to even think through it all.

But this relates to you in that these essentials that we have reviewed feed into the life you have or want to have. I am actively working through the essentials in my own life and figuring out not only defining my why but also what components I would like to see in my life that are not currently present, as well as those that are present and need to go.

CTA:

My call to action is to take this opportunity to think about where you are in life. Are those aspects that are truly essential to you actually reflected in how you live your life? If they are not, what needs to change? What do you need to do to be more intentional with your life and to make sure that you are actively involved in formulating the life you want versus that which is haphazardly or unintentionally now your life?
