In the last few blogs, we went through the process of looking at your finances through the lens of a financial snapshot. We took into consideration six key components that have to do with your personal finances and gave you a quick idea of how you are doing in each of these specific areas. Then we followed it up with three key components that add to your financial snapshot and which you want to keep in consideration.
Because this theme is on income, I also want to cover the \”three p\’s\”. This concept is not a new idea, but I wanted to look over it today, focusing on the theme of income.
So What Are The \”Three P\’s\”?
The three p\’s come down to passion, proficiency, and provision.
Passion looks at what you would do, whether you were paid or not, and which you desire and long to do.
Proficiency looks at what you were wired and born to do, have a unique skill set in, and can become the best at doing.
The last component, provision, comes down to what you can make an income from to provide for you and your family.
Now, let\’s take a closer look at these three components to your provision, beginning with passion.
Passion
Passion comes down to what you would be doing, whether someone paid you to do it or not. It would be something you\’re passionate about and life-giving to you. You would get up and do it every day without wearing out because it is something that\’s energizing.
Looking at it from that component, what I would encourage you to do is take out a piece of paper or pull out your computer, sit down, and list out all those things that you\’re excited and passionate about and which you have a level of energy around.
Proficiency
The second component comes down to proficiency. Now, this could be a learned behavior or something that you\’re naturally skilled at doing. It could be something that you have become world-class at because you\’ve hit that 10,000-hour mark and have continued to work on and perfect.
This thing could also be something that comes supernaturally to you and which you\’re just naturally very gifted at or something that you find interesting. But what I would look at is writing down what you\’re good at, what people throughout your life have told you that you\’re skilled at, and all those components and aspects that you are uniquely skilled at doing.
Provision
The third and final component comes down to your actual provision: what gives you the ability to make a living. You want to find something that you\’re passionate about, have proficiency in, and that you can make an income from for you, your spouse, and your family. You\’ll want to go over the first two aspects before looking at this final component because it\’ll allow you to see which areas align within the first two columns. From there, you can figure out the third column and see what you could do to hit all three columns. Figuring this out will be essential.
I\’d encourage you to do this because, sadly, so many people, like 70 to 80 percent, hate their jobs. It\’s so important when looking at income that you\’re very intentional about seeing where you are today and where you want to go based on your vision so that you can figure out if the steps you\’re taking are leading you towards your or away from your vision.
For many people, if they just went through the three p\’s of provision and went through this process, they would be able to solidify that they are in the right field, or it would prompt them to do some more soul searching to figure out what they should be doing.
Call To Action
Today, my call to action is to determine what falls under these three columns (passion, proficiency, provision) for you and determine if things cross over those three components. Do these things actually align with what you\’re doing today?
If they don\’t, explore those options and see how you can line those three aspects with where you want to go so that you\’re moving towards your vision and not away from it.
