I want to talk to you about budgeting
because I find it crucial to have a plan for your money. Personal finance personalities have seemingly removed the word budget from their terminology, mainly because of the backlash of viewers and audiences who have a visceral reaction to that word. I also think that the \”b\” word has been exhausted to a certain extent. Therefore, I typically refer to a budget as a spending plan or a plan to spend. This little phrase is just a play on words. It may not feel like you are any more liberated by not having to use the word \”budget.\” Still, it\’s so important that you set aside time in this area so that you are ensuring on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis that you\’re living within your means—and I know that\’s no small feat in today\’s culture! But remember: money is just a tool.
Let me ask you a question: do you direct funds toward the areas that add the most value in your life?
If you successfully maintain the perspective that you can use money as a resource for not only your needs but also your wants, then it so much easier to go through that process and to experience what may be painful in order to analyze where you stand and where you want to go. There is great freedom within parameters, and although parameters feel like they can be restricting, often, they allow you to take the time to figure out what matters to you and where you want to apply your time, talent, and resources. You\’ll discover that each dollar you allocate to a specific category offers even more value than it did before. It\’s so important that you apply your time, talent, and resources to the areas that add the most value to you specifically—what is most valuable to you will not necessarily be valuable to someone else, and vice versa. This reality is precisely why a budget or a plan to spend should be personal to you.
Most people don\’t budget at all, first and foremost, but secondly, they don\’t take the time to designate funds that would provide the most value in their life specifically.
So let\’s change that! Let\’s set the stage and develop the framework for you to operate within a personalized spending plan. This spending plan will be catered to you specifically, and recall: what works for someone else will not necessarily work for you.
It may be my career choice of accounting and finances. It may be my upbringing, or it may just be my personal convictions around operating within the framework of a budget… but I find that there\’s so much freedom in parameters. A lot of stress comes from a lack of perceived or actual control of your personal finances. I want to continue to help you set up the tools and the framework that build responsible financial behaviors so that this isn\’t such a stressful topic, and so this is something that you can get better at on a daily basis.
